What type of steel is used in a Swiss Army Knife? Here is the answer directly from Victorinox. The various tools are manufactured from high-quality steel which exhibits precisely tuned features that are keys for the particular application. Victorinox has every delivery of steel checked by means of spectral analysis. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and optimum resistance to corrosion. The quality of a knife doesn’t just depend on the correct alloy; it also depends on the precise hardening and annealing temperature. After hardening and annealing, the blades have a hardness of 56 HRC. In principle, the greater the hardness the better the edge-holding ability of the steel. But this also depends on the particular geometry of the blade. As the Rockwell hardness increases the steel also becomes more brittle and prone to fracturing. To make blades for pocket tools and household knives we use a stainless special knife steel alloyed with chromium and molybdenum. The type of stainless steel we use is a composition between 420 and 440A (A.I.S.I).
All material is tested in accordance with inspection certificate 3.1 to SN EN 10204. All specifications and guidelines comply with the requirements of standard SN EN ISO 8442-1.
